Hobby spinners spin their own yarn sequentially to control specific yarn qualities & create yarn non commercially available. It too will spin for even self-autonomy, feel of accomplishment or feel of connection to history & a land. &, naturally, for the ruminative qualities of spinning.

Materials that may be utilized to produce yarn fall into leash wide classes: plant, animal, and synthetic.

Plant materials: cotton, flax (to produce linen), hemp, raffia, yucca, coconut husk, ... Fauna materials: wool, goat (angora or cashmere goat), rabbit (angora), llama, alpaca, dog, camel, silk, ... Synthetic materials: nylon, rayon, acetate, Mylar®, ... Mineral: asbestos, but not very often
